Most people would say that Beech Mountain, NC has never really been thought of as a premier East coast getaway destination for hiking, mountain biking, or trail running, more of a great destination for Winter sports like skiing and snowboarding due to the high amounts of snow the area receives each year.

The brand new Beech Mountain Adventure Trail Park is a great family getaway or adventure getaway destination!
Last year Beech Mountain’s fitness and wellness coordinator Daniel Scagnelli began clearing unused and undiscovered trails through Beech Mountain’s uninhabited unique forest land in his spare time. Daniel’s initial intent was nothing more than a selfish desire to fulfill his own need for an outdoor trail system that he could use while training for cycling and running competitions, but Daniel quickly realized that other cyclists and runners would also love to use the facilities he was working hard to create.
With cooperation from the city departments and after many months of hard work from Daniel, local college sports teams, enthusiasts, and other volunteers, Emerald Outback, the first phase of the new trail system officially opened to the public May 1, 2011.
At nearly 5,500 foot above sea level Emerald Outback is some of the highest trails on the East coast and it is this high elevation that creates a great training opportunity for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. The single and double track trail system stretches approximately 8 miles and creates a perfect venue for hiking, mountain biking, and trail running. This trail system is probably unlike any other though in the beautiful outlooks and views of North Carolina, Virginia, and even Tennessee mountains available along the way.
Keeping in theme with the ski resort, the skill level of each trail is designated by green, blue, or white (for black diamond) signage throughout the trail system. From beginners to the most advanced hikers and mountain bikers, this new trail system offers something for everyone!
Perfect for a family weekend getaway, local bicycle shop Cycle4Life even offers a guided trip where guests are taken to the top of the trail system and ride gravel and paved road almost all downhill to the Banner Elk Winery area. During this journey guests get to take in some of the most beautiful views in the high country.
This new addition to Beech Mountain is very exciting for the area businesses and local outdoor enthusiasts. This new facility offers something almost no other place on the East coast can provide!
